Lewis Carroll in the Mix??

Here are the first 3 of 6 mixes made as musical/acoustic backdrops for six chapters from Lewis Carroll's strange little book, "Sylvie and Bruno". The mixes represent something like "variations on ...": I didn't try to illustrate anything from the story, although some parts get rather picturesque sometimes.

The first two parts are rather frugal regarding the sounds & music I used. "Light come, Light go" starts off with very beautiful piece for three recorders by the Swedish composer Lars Hallnäs. He hasn't got released much, but if you see any of the CDs from the Swedish "content" label with his works, grab it. Highly recommended. "Light come, Light go" closes with a magic little tune from a dubstep EP by Luca Venezia.
* * *
The second part, "Through the Ivory Door", revolves around a percussion piece of mine, featuring an unsual sound-painting from Gavin Bryars' "Chambre d'Ecoute" and Modul's minimalistic pulsations. Additional FX & treatments by me.
* * *
"Crossing the Line", the last part, draws a wide musical arc from Howard Skempton's miniature "Prelude" for hornto Deepchord's ultra-deep electronic dub, via Gimmer Nicholson's electronic folk from the late sixties, some heavily processed 12th century Templar Knight chants and the sweet "Woven Clouds" by Carter Tutti (of Throbbing Gristle fame).

enjoying these mixes of yrs! -- haven't had a chance to venture beyond the looking glass into this one yet, but eager to put my ears to the task. (younger &romantic i once made a stencil of that (in)famous alice liddell photo & sprayed an old train station.. . sylvie &bruno has long been one of my favorites too, so especially looking forward to its long lost soundtracks.. .)

keep on this interesting echolalia & looking forward to the conclusion! re: yr last request for voice files, i've a couple things i think might fit this aesthetic you've developing. will drop shortly.. .

also, i'm very interested in digital cover-artwork. perhaps you wouldn't say no to considering a submission?!

J. Henry,

thanks for the laurels; I'll do my best to keep you coming back for more.

Sylvie & Bruno's serenity is really contagious. Was I glad to discover that there's also a "Sylvie and Bruno concluded".

Literature is always a great inspiration. I'm planning a longish mix after "The Manuscript found in Saragossa", with some kind of "story-in-a-story-in-a-story-in-a-..." plot.

Please elaborate what you wrote about cover-artwork. I'm not quite catching your drift.

sorry! opacity such a downfall once i will myself into writing!

only meant i'd like to post some words/links toward this work of yrs on my site. as per, i'll prolly cook up some poem/image towards it. but also, i love working with carroll material nearly as much as i like working with other artists on projects. thatsaid: i'd be interested in putting together some images for you if you cld imagine any scenario wherein you might desire an image or two!

Dear J. Henry,

Aha! Now I get it. And it sounds good to me.

Yes please, feel free to refer to my posts here any way you like, and if you cook up some images, I'd very much like to see 'em.

Hi Earwicker,
I downloaded this to listen to in the bus tomorrow morning. I'm quite confident this will be a nice experience.
I have uploaded something for you. It's a cassette of birds field recordings called 'Animaux de nuit : étangs et marais' (Night Animals: lakes & swamps). The side A is a 20 mn cut up of birds singing recorded at night. The atmosphere is peculiar and some of the sounds are amazing. The side B has the same sound material plus a woman's voice describing what kind of bird we are hearing (in french). Hope you'll be interested by this for some of your collections or mixes.

These mixes that you've posted are unique and inspired. They sound more like compositions than just mixes of other tracks. Thanks, H.C. and keep up the great work.

Thanks for the tape, Tony. Listened to it yesterday. Great nightsounds with fantastic landscape acoustics. May I get your permission to post this on "Closet of Curiosities"?

Thanks to you, too, Grey Calx. The next mix is already in preparation, and ideas keep coming and coming. This is so much more fun than mixing dance music...

ive really enjoyed what youve been doing with these mixes...ive just started doing some similar works myself and have also begun doing more field recordings and the like to include in future projects...i feel like we have similar instincts...

so thanks for what you've shared.

i was wondering what software you have been using for yours. you mention using filters and effects. ive been struggling to get the right sort of effects in my project, perhaps you have better means of making these lovely collages and wouldn't mind exposing the behind the scenes?

here's a link to the 1st thing i did. all live mixing and mostly on the fly from a large library of tracks, so theres one point im kind of annoyed by. its mostly religious musics and audio snippets, hope you enjoy (and feel free to pass along if you do)

(sorry for rapidshare, but connection was being difficult that day)

Ben, that's a nice thematic mix you got there. I wouldn't worry too much about points of annoyance ... chances are most listeners won't notice, anyway.

For my mixes, I'm using Ableton Live (which costs money), and a long-tested collection of VST plugins, most of which are freeware from the web.
